We have not declared strike yet – ASUU

University lecturers under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday said that they had yet to declare an industrial action.
The clarification comes on the heels of a report (not in The PUNCH) that they would commence a one-week warning strike on October 2, 2016.The publication allegedly credited the report to the University of Abuja-ASUU Chapter Chairman, Dr. Ben Ugheoke.
But the ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who spoke to our correspondent on Tuesday, said the union had yet to take a decision to embark on a strike yet.

He said, “The union has not taken any decision whether or not to go on strike. All that we have done so far is to sensitise members of the public about the challenges that the education sector and the university system are facing.
“Besides, I do not know how the news came about. I have put a call across to the UNIABUJA-ASUU chairman, who denied ever making the declaration. We shall investigate this to know how it came about in the first place.
“Please help us to inform members of the public that we have yet to declare a strike.”
The union has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government over the non-implementation of a pact both parties signed in 2009.
In fact, ASUU leadership had last month urged the Federal Government to fully implement the agreement it had with the union in 2009 or risk an industrial action.
