A rights group in Benue State, Movement Against Fulani Occupation (MAFO) has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the unabated killings of Benue people by suspected herdsmen.
Spokesperson of MAFO, Gideon Inyom, who presented the petition at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, lamented that in his address at the recently concluded UN General Assembly, President Muhammadu Buhari did not raise concern over the terrorist activities of the herdsmen in Nigeria.
He, therefore, appealed to the NHRC to act fast to end the systemic annihilation of Benue indigenes.
Receiving the petition, deputy director, Protection and Investigation at the commission, Lambert Okpara, assured that the NHRC will leave no stone unturned in promoting and protecting the rights of citizens.
Recall that MAFO, in April 2016, filed a suit at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice over alleged breach of human rights. The plaintiffs are among other things, demanding N500 billion compensation for unlawful violation of their rights and another N25 million as cost of prosecuting the suit.
They also want the court to direct the defendants to set up a panel to investigate herdsmen attacks over the years and implement its findings.
