FG Programme Teaches Nigerians Tiv and Other Six Nigerian Languages

In order to mobilise Nigerians towards a culture-oriented lifestyle, the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, is set to organise the 2016 edition of its annual four-week Nigerian Indigenous Language Programme (NILP), where Nigerians would be trained in six indigenous languages.
This year’s edition of the programme in Abuja is expected to feature Efik, Gbagyi, Igbo, Hausa, Tiv and Yoruba.
Dr. Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma, the Executive Secretary of NICO, said participation in this year’s edition of the programme, which starts Monday, August 1, 2016, at the institute’s head office, located at No. 23, Kigoma Street, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja, as well as its zonal offices, is free of charge.
Ayakoroma also said the programme would run simultaneously in Akure (Ondo State), Yenagoa (Bayelsa State), Owerri (Imo State), Katsina (Kastina State), Ilorin (Kwara State) and Yola (Adamawa State) where NICO’s zonal offices are located.
At inception, the NILP, which started with only three languages (Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba), was designed to educate young children during the summer holidays but today it has been extended to both government agencies, private groups, embassies and individuals interested in learning Nigerian languages and cultures.
